What is the SOA pathway exam?
The Society of Actuaries credentials actuaries working in life insurance, health, retirement and investment. Its route has three stops: Associate, then optionally the Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst credential, then Fellow. The Casualty Actuarial Society covers property and casualty work instead, and the two share the first two exams.
Associateship is the substantial milestone and takes most candidates three to five years. It requires six exams, three validation by educational experience credits, three modules or assessments, an e-Learning course and a professionalism course. The exams are Probability, Financial Mathematics, Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics for Risk Modeling, Predictive Analytics, and a choice between Advanced Long-Term and Advanced Short-Term Actuarial Mathematics.
Fellowship changed substantially in late 2025. The six specialty tracks were replaced by a flexible pathway of numbered courses: candidates take four technical courses, of which one 100 and 200 level pair must come from a single practice area, plus a decision-making and communications course and the Fellowship Admissions Course. Descriptions of the old track system are now out of date.

How to prepare for SOA pathway

Start with Exams P and FM. They are the cheapest, they have the most sittings a year, and they count for the CAS as well, so you need not choose between the two bodies yet.

Expect the format to change after FAM and SRM. ALTAM, ASTAM, PA and the Fellowship courses are written-answer or project-based, and candidates who have only ever sat multiple choice find that transition harder than the content.

Pick your ALTAM or ASTAM side by where you want to work: long-term for life and pensions, short-term for health and general insurance.

Watch the cost step up. Preliminary exams are a few hundred dollars each, but Exam PA, the ATPA assessment and every Fellowship course run past a thousand, so employer support matters more later.

If ERM interests you, look at CERA early. It needs most of the ASA requirements plus CFE 101 and the ERM module, so it can be picked up close to Associateship rather than after Fellowship.

SOA pathway FAQ
Should I choose the SOA or the CAS?
It depends on the insurance you want to work in: the SOA for life, health, retirement and investment, the CAS for property and casualty. Exams P and FM count for both, so the decision can wait.
Did the FSA tracks really disappear?
Yes. From late 2025 the six specialty tracks were replaced by a flexible pathway of numbered courses across seven practice areas, and credits from the old structure transitioned across without expiring.
What is CERA and where does it fit?
The Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst credential. It needs most of the ASA requirements plus the CFE 101 enterprise risk management exam and the ERM module, so it sits between Associate and Fellow rather than after both.
