What is the Series 7 exam?
The Series 7 is the general securities representative licence. Holding it, together with the Securities Industry Essentials exam, lets you solicit, purchase and sell effectively the full range of securities products: equities, bonds, mutual funds, options, government and municipal securities, and alternatives such as hedge funds and venture capital.
It is the most widely held of the representative exams because it is the broadest. Narrower licences exist and are sometimes the better fit, such as the Series 6 for a mutual fund and insurance role or the Series 79 for investment banking, but the Series 7 is the default for a client-facing brokerage or wealth management job.
The exam is dominated by one job function. Providing customers with information about investments, making recommendations, transferring assets and maintaining records accounts for 73 percent of the questions. The other three functions together make up barely a quarter of the paper.

- New hires at broker-dealers and wealth managers in client-facing roles

How to prepare for Series 7
- 1
Almost everything is in one function. Recommendations, information and record-keeping is 73 percent of the exam, so product knowledge and suitability rules deserve the overwhelming majority of your time.
- 2
Options are the usual stumbling block. They are a small share of the curriculum but a large share of the questions candidates get wrong, and they reward drilling the standard strategies until the payoff diagrams are automatic.
- 3
Municipal securities and their rules appear more often than newcomers expect. Do not treat them as a niche.
- 4
Plan the state law exam at the same time. Passing the Series 7 alone does not let you transact in a state, so most people also sit the Series 63 or 66, and the 66 has the Series 7 as a co-requisite.
- 5
Check the retake waiting period before booking. A failure currently costs 30 days, and a third failure 180, which can derail a start date.
We don't cover Series 7 yet
We have no Series 7 study material and none planned. If you are building analytical depth alongside your licence, our CFA Level I material covers equity and fixed income analysis, derivatives and portfolio management, which the Series 7 touches only as product knowledge.
Series 7 FAQ
Can I take the Series 7 without a sponsoring firm?
No. Unlike the SIE, it requires sponsorship by a FINRA member firm, so in practice you need the job first.
Do I need the Series 63 or 66 as well?
Almost always. The Series 7 is a federal licence; the state law exams cover registration within a state. The Series 66 combines the agent and adviser state exams and has the Series 7 as a co-requisite.
What is the difference between the Series 7 and the Series 65?
The Series 7 licenses you to sell securities for a broker-dealer on commission. The Series 65 qualifies you as an investment adviser representative, giving advice for a fee, and it needs no sponsorship.
Does StudyOptima have Series 7 questions?
No, and none are planned. These are US licensing exams and sit outside the analytical credentials we build for.
